Feinsteins at the Regency
Presents
Keely Smith
Featuring "Keely Sings Sinatra" from her new Concord CD
Opening May 8th
**Special Three Week Engagement through May 26th**
"The Queen of Swing" Keely Smith
will open her new show at Feinsteins at the Regency (located at 540 Park
Avenue at 61st Street) Tuesday, May 8th (8:30PM) as a tribute to her friend
and mentor Frank Sinatra. Through songs, personal remembrances and a keen sense
of humor, Ms. Smith keeps alive her special companionship with "Ole Blues
Eyes." Under the musical direction of Dennis Michaels, the evening will
feature selections from Ms. Smiths CDs "Swing, Swing, Swing"
and "Keely Sings Sinatra." Keely Smith will appear through Saturday,
May 26th.
Keely Smith will forever be linked with jazz great Louis Prima; in 1949 she
became the "girl singer" for Primas band and the foil for his
infamous zany antics. They married in 1953 and were offered a job at Las Vegas
Sahara Hotel doing a late night show from midnight to 6AM. The act entitled
"The Witnesses" became the talk of the town, with visits by Frank
Sinatra, Dean Martin and Howard Hughes. Capitol Records recorded Ms. Smith with
the band and as a solo artist with both Billy May and Nelson Riddles orchestras.
Smith and Prima performed their unique stylized versions of well-known songs,
in 1958 their rendition of "That Old Black Magic" was a US Top 20
hit. Dot records signed the husband and wife team in 1959. In the early 60s,
Ms. Smith separated from Prima and signed with the Sinatra owned label: Reprise,
where her musical director was Nelson Riddle. Ms. Smith made her solo debut
in Las Vegas 1962 and in 1965 made an album in Great Britain of the Beatles
compositions. After marrying record producer Jimmy Bowen (now divorced), Ms.
Smith left her singing career to take care of her children. Now that the children
are grown Ms. Smith is again taking the music world by storm. Her newest CD
on Concord Records "Keely Sings Sinatra" is the follow-up to her acclaimed
1999 release "Swing, Swing, Swing."
Joining pianist Dennis Michaels will be John Oddo on synthesizer, Jerry Vevino
on saxophone, Jeff Carney on bass, Frank Capp on drums and cellists David Heiss,
Garo Yellin, Danny Miller and Jeff Szabo.
Feinsteins at the Regency shares space with the 540 Park restaurant, New
Yorks hottest "power breakfast" room, and is transformed every
evening into "The Nightclub of New York." The sophisticated and intimate
nightclub opened in October 1999 and was the inspiration of performer Michael
Feinstein and Jonathan Tisch, CEO of Loews Hotels. The club recalls the lush
elegance of a bygone time, boasting an eclectic mix of top-notch entertainers
including Barbara Cook, Rosemary Clooney, Glen Campbell, Ronan Tynan, The John
Pizzarelli Trio, Linda Eder, Cleo Laine & John Dankworth, Dee Dee Bridgewater,
Polly Bergen and Michael Feinstein.
Keely Smith will play the following schedule: Tuesday through Saturday at 8:30PM
, with late shows on Friday and Saturday at 11PM. Ticket prices and food &
beverage minimums are $60 cover and $50 minimum. Jackets are suggested, but
not required. Feinsteins at the Regency is located at 540 Park Avenue
at 61st Street in New York City. For ticket reservations and club information
call 212-339-4095, or log-on to ticketmaster.com.
